US Women’s National Team Coach Emma Hayes is taking another step in developing the USSWNT player pool. The manager mentioned a U-23 selection of 20 players for a training camp and matches in Germany. The two-game series are played in two stadiums outside of Stuttgart, Germany, on 30 May and 2 June. These are the first games for the renewed U-23 program of Hayes in 2025.
“This is an incredible opportunity for our U-23 player pool to tackle opponents in Europe and to give them the valuable experiences that are the much needed experiences,” Hayes said. “We want to be very aware of the development of our players through different experiences, and as I have spoken before, this will take the form of some players playing in U-23 games and at other times will be engaged with the WNT. This is because we want to increase the diversity of opponents at a high level that they can compete with, but the methodology and coaching points will be the same.”
The U-23 schedule has its own coaching staff, led by head coach Heather Dyche of the University of New Mexico. Orlando Pride Assistant coach Yolanda Thomas, and former USWNT player Stephanie Cox, an Olympic gold medal winner from 2008, will serve as U-23 assistant coaches, in addition to the American youth national team and former San Diego Wave-Oo-Coach Louis Hunt.
The schedule has 15 players who are younger than 23 years old, and in an agreement with Germany and U23 standards in Europe, each schedule will have five “over-age” players who can be born before January 1, 1999.
There are 16 NWSL and three European Club Pro players on the U23 schedule, and only one active university player, University of North Carolina midfielder Evelyn Shores.
Ten players mentioned in the schedule have scored this season in the NWSL.
