Schools with the most DI women’s basketball national championships

In the NCAA 2025 tournament, Uconn knocked down the defending champions in South Carolina to capture its 12th championship and first since 2016. This is the most in sport history.

Louisiana Tech was the first NCAA champion in women’s basketball Division I and defeated Cheyney, 76-62, in 1982 in the first title game in Norfolk in Virginia.

Huskies always look like a team with the biggest goal on the back every season. Of their 12 titles, six ended in undefeated seasons. Two of them came during their A record winning lane of 111 games This lasted 867 days from 2014 to 2017. This undefeated season was:

8 – Tennessee (2008, 2007, 1998, 1997, 1996, 1991, 1989, 1987)

Before Lady Vols came, the winners were more titles, but Pat Summitt led a female basketball to the national reflector. She trained for 38 seasons and never published a record. This included eight titles in three decades and five other national campaigns.

3 (Bound) – Baylor (2019, 2012, 2005)

Kim Mulkey made annual Bears candidates. The last two titles Baylor were somewhat unforgettable, in 2019 they held a one-point victory and completed the 40-0 season in 2012.

3 – Stanford (2021, 1992, 1990)

These titles at the beginning of the 90s were only two titles for Stanford until the 2021 Championship, but the cardinal is still permanent candidates, with 15 final four performances.

3 – South Carolina (2017, 2022, 2024)

Gamecocks has appeared as a national forces since Dawn Staley took over. South Carolina has the last four four, with these three titles, including the undefeated national championship in 2024.

2 (bound) – Notre Dame (2018, 2001)

Notre Dame fell one basket to the first repetition of champions who were not named Uconn or Tennessee since the 1983 and 1984 Championships. Muffet McGraw changed the face of the program, making Irish nine finals and published five national running periods.

2 (bound) – Louisiana Tech (1988, 1982)

Lady Techsters will be remembered forever as the first national champions. In fact, they appeared in four of the first seven title games. Louisiana Tech has four national running campaigns that have not achieved the final since the 1998 season.

2 (Bound) – South California (1984, 1983)

Trojan horses were the first recurring champions in the history of women’s basketball. The USC first destroyed the hopes of Louisiana Tech to repeat in ’83, before the two -point victory in 1984 sent Pat Summitt Home Winless on its first attempt at the National Championship.
