NHL coaching carousel 2025: Ducks hire Joel Quenneville to first job since 2021; Rangers hire Mike Sullivan
With Nhl Out of season, which was in full evolution for many teams, the coach’s carousel saw another contract on Thursday. Ducks Anaheim have announced it Joel Quenneville, Stanley Cup champion three times He will be his next coach.
Quenneville has not been trained since he resigned in 2021, when he had seven games in his third season with Florida Panthers. Following an independent investigation into the manipulation of Chicago Blackhawks’s sexual assault complaints during the 2010 Stanley Cup race, Quenneville was ineligible to work at the NHL for three years.
In July 2024, Quenneville was refunded by the NHL curator Gary Bettman after showing what was described as “sincere remorse.”
Quenneville, who won three drinks with the Blackhawks from 2010-2015, will replace Greg Cronin in Anaheim. Ducks GM Pat Verbeek said that the team performed a “comprehensive review” of what happened in 2010 before hiring Quenneville.
Quenneville is not the only big name to get a new job this season. The Rangers hired the former coach of Pittsburgh Penguins, Mike Sullivan, as the 38th coach in the history of the franchise on May 2. Sullivan separated with the penguins after ten seasons, in which he brought them to seven appearances in the later season in seven of these seasons, including winning back glasses in 2016 and 2017.
Sullivan has brought together a record 479-311-112 in 917 race games as main coach. He has served as coach of the Boston Bruins (2003-2006) in addition to the penguins (2015-2025). Sullivan also served as an assistant coach with the Rangers from 2009 to 2013.
In the meantime, after the Vancouver Canucks chose not to collect the Rick Tocchet contract option for the 2025-26 season, they tried to make a new agreement, but this never materialized. Both parties went below, and Tocchet is now a coaching -free agent. In her two more years with the Canucks, Tocchet brought the team to a global record of 108-65-27.
