Former Blackhawks employee suing team for alleged discrimination, retaliation, per report

A former Chicago Blackhawks employee is calling for the team for alleged unlawful discrimination and completion, According to athletics. Anthony Filomena, the former director of Public Relations, claims that his supervisor was unfairly treated for being gay and that he was fired shortly after an interview with Outsports.

The demand was filed on Thursday, and in it, Filomena claims that he endured “hostile and aggressive actions” of his supervisor. The demand also presents the affirmation of Filomena that the heels of his interview with Outsports, a website that covers LGBTQ+ problems in sports, was fired.

Filomena says he got the approval of the President and Owner of Blackhawks, Danny Wirtz, but claims that his supervisor was still unhappy.

Outsports interview was published on April 29, 2024. According to demand, a senior employee faced Filomena three days later, saying that his department was “very angry.”

After the alleged confrontation with the senior employee, Filomena claims that he told his supervisor about the matter. Filomena stated his belief that the criticism of the employee was based on discrimination.

One day after Filomena’s alleged conversation with his supervisor, on May 3, 2024, he was fired. The demand states that the calendar of the completion of Filomena is “direct evidence of retaliation”.

In a statement in athletics, Blackhawks deny Filomena’s claims that their termination had anything to do with their sexual orientation or the interview with Outsports. The team claims that Filomena had “multiple cases of misconduct for a period of six months” and received a formal warning before its shot.

“Mr. Filomena ended the cause due to multiple cases of misconduct for a period of six months,” the team said in a statement. “He received multiple written communications on expectations, including a formal and written warning before his dismissal. Its completion was due only to continuous conduct and the policies of our company were not taken into account.”

The demand filed by Filomena claims that it had a “perfect rating” for its latest performance review, which was carried out one month before its completion. Demand also says that the team’s reasons for the firing of Filomena were “manufactured, exaggerated, or not the real basis for the decision”.

In his demand, Filomena seeks to go back with interest, payment, lost benefits, lawyers and compensatory and punitive damage.
