The road to the Concacaf Gold Cup final is set when the groups were drawn on Thursday, placing the United States in Group D next to Saudi Arabia, Trinidad and Tobago and Haiti. On June 14, the final starts and runs until 6 July at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, this will be a slightly different gold cup than in recent years. The United States did not always send its top team to the tournament, but that could change after a bad Concacaf Nations League final with new coach Mauricio Pochettino at the helm.

With the Gold Cup that takes place a year prior to the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, this is the last chance that the Three Nations will have to play competitive matches before the World Cup starts. As a host country, the US will not be involved in the qualification of Concacaf World Cup, which increases the use of this Gold Cup tournament.

In this tournament, games will also take place in Canada next to the United States, where Vancouver is one of the guest cities for the first time. The other locations will be in the United States, splitting the tournament in regions from the Midwest to the West Coast, because it will run next to the FIFA Club World Cup for part of the summer.

The United States’ disappointment at the Nations LeagueWon by Mexico is what could lead to them sending players like Christian Pulisic to the Gold Cup. Time spent with this team would be the longest Pochettino that the senior team had since he took the job. With the USMNT who must find their identity under the Argentinian tactician, this is a good tournament to work on it while it is a positive momentum for the World Cup. Because Saudi Arabia is a invited guest for the tournament, the USMNT will have formidable opposition, but let’s see how the groups shake.

Concacaf Gold Cup groups

  • Group A: Mexico, Costa Rica, Suriname, Dominican Republic
  • Group B: Canada, Honduras, El Salvador, Curacao
  • Group C: Panama, Jamaica, Guatemala, Guadeloupe
  • Group D: United States, Haiti, Trinidad & Tobago, Saudi -Arabia

The top two teams in each group continue to the knock -out phase with a chance of lifting the Gold Cup championship. Mexico is the current reigning champion at the United States, who last wins the tournament in 2021. Memories of Trinidad & Tobago that hits them out of the race for the World Cup 2018 will still appear after the draw. The Americans will also receive a Saudi Arabia side that has developed one of the greatest disturbances in the history of the World Cup and beat the final champions Argentina at the World Championship 2022 in Qatar. This tournament is a big chance for Pochettino to pass those memories.

Although there is no real group of death, Mexico can cause some disruptions if El Tri is not careful next to an improving Suriname side. All three of the United States, Mexico and Canada will be preferred to win their respective groups, but with strong dual-national recruitment are quickly improving his Concacaf parties, so there will be no easy luminaires. All three teams will enter this tournament with the feeling that they can lift the cup in Houston.
