The US Hockey won their first gold medal at the IIHF World Championship on Sunday 92 years in Stockholm, Sweden, defeating Switzerland 1-0 behind a solitary goal in Tage Thompson’s extension. The victory marked the first World Team USA championship since 1933.

Thompson, a current member of the buffalo knowledge and ex-first round of the first round of St. Louis Blues in 2016 buried a wrist shot in front of the goalkeeper of Switzerland, Leonardo Genoni, just two minutes from the extension. Logan Cooley and Brady Skjei were accredited with assistance to the Golden goal.

The US had not even appeared in the final of the World Championship since 1934, but called for four bronze medals in the last twelve years to show constant progress that led to this historic gold medal.

And after being recognized as a champion, the team came up with the t -shirt of the late Johnny Gaudreau, the north -American star who died next to his brother, Matthew, while cycling after being hit by a drunken driver last August.

The Americans won a place in the championship game Sunday with a 6-2 dominant victory over the host and favored Sweden. Previously in the tournament, the Americans made a 5-1 lead against Norway, but escaped closely with a victory of 6-5 extraordinary hours. Its only loss occurred in the preliminary round, a 3-0 defeat against Switzerland, who preceded the next call against Norway.

The United States surpassed its opponents 45-20 in 11 games in the tournament, publishing three descents, including the victory by 1-0 on Switzerland in the Gold Medal Party.

The resistant performance Sunday, fueled by a talented group and a strong chemistry of the team, helped the North -American to overcome decades of frustration to capture a world title that had avoided them for almost a century. The victory not only ended the longest gold medal drought in the history of the tournament, but also said that U.S. hockey has returned to the highest international competition.
