Who makes which competition?

Due to the performance of English teams in European competition that stimulate their coefficient points, England received an extra Champions League spot for next season.

Here is how things stand for now:

  • First up to and including fifth place is eligible for the UEFA Champions League
  • The Europa League winners between Manchester United and Tottenham will also qualify for UCL
  • Sixth place is going to Europa League for now
  • Seventh place is going to the Conference League for now

What does the victory of Crystal Palace mean?

The victory of Crystal Palace means that they automatically qualify for the Europa League next season.

What if Chelsea wins the Conference League?

This is where things become amazing. Qualifications can be difficult based on if they win the competition or not.

When Chelsea wins the tournament and ends in the top five of the Premier League:

  • The top five, including Chelsea, is eligible for the Champions League together with the winner of the Europa League final (Tottenham vs. Man United).
  • Crystal Palace and the sixth place team will make Europa League.
  • Newcastle, expecting the Champions League via the competition position, would make Conference League like Carabao Cup winners if they do not finish in the top five.

If Chelsea wins the tournament and ends sixth in the Premier League, they get an extra team in Europa League:

  • The top five is eligible for the Champions League together with the winner of the Europa League final (Tottenham vs. Man United).
  • Crystal Palace, Chelsea (as winners of the Conference League) and the Seventh place team will make Europa League.
  • Newcastle, expecting the Champions League via the competition position, would make Conference League like Carabao Cup winners if they do not finish in the top five.

How can the team of eighth place make it?

Now we go in Bizarro world scenarios. But there is a chance that the team of eighth place could reach European competition:

To make that happen, the following must take place (this is all assuming that Newcastle finish is in the top six):

  • Chelsea wins the Conference League and ends outside the top five.

Because that would mean that Chelsea gets a Europe spot for winning the Conference League, where they would have pushed the Europe place that they would have claimed to seventh place through the competition position, which in turn reserves the spot of the Conference League for the seventh place to essentially go to eighth place. It is a bit more technical than that, but we really want a weekend headache. You do? Great.

Before any allocation of stains it would look like this, Per ESPN.

UCL: 1-4 and the Europa League winners
HE: 5, Crystal Palace
CL: 6

When Chelsea finishes seventh and the final of the Conference League wins:

UCL: 1-4 and the Europa League winners
HE: 5, Crystal Palace, Chelsea as CL winners
CL: 6

As soon as the performances have been charged, the CL spot jumps over Chelsea, because they would be in Europe as CL:

UCL: 1-5 and the Europa League winners
HE: 6, Chelsea as CL winners
CL: 8
