LA Galaxy off to worst start by reigning MLS champions with zero wins through 12 games

On Saturday things reached a new low point for the Los Angeles Galaxy, who lost 7-0 to the New York Red Bulls, and it is now the worst start of a defensive MLS Cup champion in history with zero victories after 12 games. It was a rematch of the 2024 ml cup that lifted the Galaxy, and a show of how far they have fallen, with the Red Bulls that bind the biggest victory margin in a Rematch with their triumph with seven goals. It is also only the second time in their history that the Red Bulls scored seven goals, and their first time since 2016.

In 12 games this season, the Galaxy is at the bottom of the Western Conference. With a competition-high 28 goals, things couldn’t get much worse for the Greg Vanney team, but they also scored the racing goals in MLS, with only eight goals.

Struggles were expected with Star -midfielder Riqui Puwig missed the start of the season with an ACL injury, but with stars such as Marco Reus, Gabriel PEC and Joseph Paintsil in the team, the scoring of Doelen was not expected to be a problem for the Galaxy. Since MLS is a salary cap League, it is of course that changes can come after winning the title and that those changes can make the team worse, but with an XG of 12.93 it does not agree as if they are missing good opportunities; They just don’t create them at all.

Let’s look at the worst start for defending champions in some other competitions in the United States:

NFL: Los Angeles Rams (2022-23)

In 2022, after winning the Super Bowl, the Rams could not have risen worse with a 3-6 record. They won two of their first three games of the season and then went into a downward play, but only won five games before they missed the play -offs and finished third in the NFC West. This was the season in which Matthew Stafford played in just nine games due to an injury.

This is still not as bad as what the Galaxy is going through at the moment, but it was the joint start of an NFL team after winning the Super Bowl.

MLB: Florida Marlins (1998)

In baseball is the worst start of a title defender in 1998 to the Florida Marlins (now Miami Marlins). They were won the World Series in 1997, but then they exchanged Moises Alou to the Houston Astros and started the season 1-9 before they ended up 54-108.
