The national team of the American gentlemen did not make it easy on Sunday, but they booked their place in the semi-final after a roller coaster of a match against Costa Rica, who bonded 2-2 before she won 4-3 in a penalty shootout.
It came with a rocky start when Max Arfsten admitted a penalty in the 11th minute, who then converted Francisco Calvo to give Costa Rica a 1-0 lead. However, it did not ride exactly a lively USMNT, who created a chance in the first half after a coincidence. The missed fine of Malik Tillman in the 37th minute offered another setback, but Diego Luna’s 41st minute equalizer was a worthy reward for their efforts, just like Arfsten’s Go-Ahead goal in the 49th minute. The US then gained their foot from the gas and later paid the price with the 71st Equalizer from Alonso Martinez, which sent the game to penalties. In a match that went to six rounds, Matt Freese made three saves and Damion Downs scored the shootout-winning penalty to send the USMNT to the next round.
It was a real moment in the sun for Matt Freese, who has become the unlikely first-choice keeper, even during a tournament that head coach Mauricio Pochettino used to explore the wider player pool. Those minutes probably ever land to Patrick Schulte or Zack Steffen, but injuries meant that Freese was the standard under study for Matt Turner and although he was not always impressed, the 26-year-old argued for himself in the shooting. Freese came to the ranks in MLS Next Pro, where competitions do not end in ties but immediately go to punishments, which means that he now has a record of six victories in seven shooting points between his experiences as a youth player and as a senior professional, I indicate so much in an interview after the game.
- FREESE: “Punishments are my thing. [On] The plane runs here to Minnesota. I studied the penalties. I studied them all week and was ready for it when we needed it, and the one I didn’t go further [was a] Suggestion of my goalkeeper coach Toni Jimenez. “
Freese becomes the latest USMNT player who makes a name for himself during a Gold Cup-Run that is full of opportunities for inexperienced players and joins Malik Tillman on that list. The goalkeeper was also not the only one who did this on Sunday – Luna, who quickly became a Pochettino favorite for his mentality, linked his competitive drive with an important goal against Costa Rica, while Arfsten played a major role in the energetic start of the USMNT until the first half, even with his shortcomings.

The knockouts of the club World Cup are officially underway, with four quarter -final berths already booked and another four to decide in the next few days. The field for the Tour of 16 represented a unique collection of teams, most of Europe and South America, but three from outside those continents that made it. As the knockouts have played so far, however, the favorites seem to be at the top – and there is a growing feeling that everything can tilt sooner in Europe’s favor.
Some results are less surprising than others, such as the 4-0 pumming of Paris Saint-Germain from Inter Miami on Sunday. Lionel Messi did not make much impact because the last MLS team that was aware were exposed by the UEFA Champions League winners and a grim memory offered what can happen if the World Cup winner Winner in a team sport, as James Benge writes, writes James Benge writes.
- Curvature: “Inter Miami felt like a Lionel Messi team, just not the one you remember the most. Instead, they had been scammed in Barcelona in recent years when he was wearing a too heavy attacking load, the weird PSG Sojourn where all the attacking talent was in his side, but the great man was reasonable to play the club – Catering was reasonable for the club. To take on the best teams in the world.
Elsewhere, Chelsea Benfica defeated in a weather trip game that went to extra time and turned Palmeiras Botafogo off in the All-Brazilian matchup of the Tour of 16. Bayern Munich’s 4-2 victory over Sunday, however, offers the setup for what a European-focused last eight could be. Their competition is one of the two that are between European and South -American teams in the last 16, the other is the Inter with Fluminense match on Monday and offers the possibility that Palmeiras will be the only quarter -finalist of Conmebol. The remaining round of 16 matchups will also prefer Europa-Real Madrid and Juventus will play each other, while Manchester City are the favorites against Al-Hilal and Borussia Dortmund have the chances to their advantage against Monterrey.
It all goes for an outcome that might miss surprises, as well as the international flair that gave the group stage legitimacy and charm on the field.

💰 The choice: Gonzalo Garcia to score (+160) – While the availability of Kylian Mbappe remains in the air after a battle with gastro -centeritis and the future of Rodrygo with Real Madrid, perhaps in question, Gonzalo Garcia picked up the play.
