Club World Cup scores, highlights, takeaways: Sounders flounder, PSG cruise, Bayern Munich set records, more
Sunday marks the first full working day on the New-Look Club World Cup, one that will contain different European heavyweights and a handful of intriguing matchups.
The action of the day started with one of the most unclear matches of the group stage, with six-time UEFA Champions League winners Bayern Munich opposite the only semi-pro team of the competition, Auckland City FC, New Zealand. The next game of the day was easily Sunday’s Headliner act, with the new Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain who took on the Atletico Madrid in the Rose Bowl.
In the second half of Sunday’s campaign, FC Porto took on Palmeiras, of whom the last is the first South American side who participates in a competition that many of the continent will take very seriously. The last match of the day has MLS ‘Seattle Sounders, the 2022 winners of the Concacaf Champions Cup, compete against the Botafogo of Brazil in a must-win competition in a competitive group B with PSG and Atletico.
Here is a look at Sunday’s campaign at the Club World Cup.
PSG keep showing that they are the best team in Europe
Opposite Atletico Madrid without Ousmane Dembele, PSG did not miss a beat with 2-0 in the first half against Atletico Madrid. Fabian Ruiz scored the first goal 19 minutes before three different goalkeepers found the back of the net on their way to a 4-0 win. It was a match to forget about Atletico Madrid, given that Clement Lenglet took a red card, and they also gave a penalty deep in the stop time, which could make a good difference in the ultimate goal difference.
PSG dominated the match with 74% of the possession and put 11 of their 16 shots on goal. Atletico Madrid placed only one shot on goal during the entire game and could not go much outside of a Julian Alvarez goal, which was not allowed due to an error in the structure. PSG is already one step closer to winning their group after this result, while Atletico Madrid now has a must-win competition in their future, opposite the Seattle Sounders on Thursday.
Bayern Munich, as expected, destroyed amateur Auckland Side
Four players scored several goals, Jamal Musiala had a hat trick and Bayern Munich destroyed the amateur side Auckland City FC 10-0 on Sunday in their club World Cup opener. The scores and the goals scored are both records in the competition. The Bavarians had 31 shots on the 17 shots of Auckland, on frame to one, checked 72 percent of the possession and completed more than 450 more than their opponents.
Auckland City FC is filled with players with regular working weeks of 40 hours and had to apply for leisure time to attend this tournament.
It would never be easy to keep it close, but Bayern did not leave it up and put the tone in a group they share with Benfica and Boca Juniors.
Palmeiras and Porto do not launch
Despite combining 28 shots and almost three expected goals, Palmerias in Brazil and Porto Porto had to settle for a 0-0 draw. The competition marks a disappointing start for Palmeiras’ Vitor Roque, who, at the age of 20, hopes to arouse interest for a large European move. However, the striker was forced to make the maker because he was unable to get a single shot in 77 minutes of play, although he created a big chance for a teammate. He will have to do more than four details in the box if he wants to attract the attention of a European Super Club.
Botafogo Win Opening match against Seattle Sounders
South America champion Botafogo won 2-1 in their opening match of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup campaign against MLS Side Seattle Sounders in the B Game group in Lumen Field. The Brazilian side scored the first two goals of the match thanks to Jair Cunha and Igor Jesus, after Botafogo dominated the first half of the match, but Seattle was able to score their only goal of the match thanks to the bent shot of Cristian Roldan. Botafogo was able to secure their first victory of the tournament, also thanks to an excellent performance by goalkeeper John who made an important rescue in the added time to prevent Seattle from scored the equalizer.
