NHL coaching carousel 2025: Penguins hire Dan Muse after missing playoffs for third straight year

Pittsburgh penguins have hired Dan Muse to be the 23rd coach in the history of the franchise, The team announced.

“During this process, we encountered many candidates we felt that we would have been appropriate as the following main coach of the penguins, but ultimately, Dan Muse emphasized as the best option,” said Kyle Dubas, president of the hockey operations and CEO, in a statement. “ What Dan separated was his ability to develop players, gaining at all levels where he has been the main coach and his constant success coaching special teams in the NHL. From his success in the development of university and young people, to his impactful work with veteran players during his time on the NHL, Dan has shown a proven ability to connect with players in all their careers and help them.

Muse, 42, has two decades of coaching experience, including five seasons as an assistant to the NHL with the Nashville Pedators and New York Rangers. More recently, Muse was in the coaching staff of Peter Laviolette as a defense assistant with the Rangers of 2023-25.

He directed the penalty units with the predators and the Rangers in recent years. The Rangers owned the third best penalty unit with a success rate of 84.5% during the 2023-24 season, while directed the predators to the fourth percentage of penalty penalty in their two complete seasons with the 2017-19 franchise.

Muse has experience of coaching with Chicago Steel in the 2015-17 United States Hockey League. During the 2016-17 campaign, the steel had the highest record of the Eastern Conference and the third best record of the USHL.
